Uke at the Duke started in January 2011 in response to a request to run an evening jam. The Worthing jam known as Wukulele was our model and we remain close to our sister jam which is a Sunday lunchtime event. Many ukulele players attend both jams.

Uke at the Duke has its own songbooks and invites players to submit their favourites for inclusion, songs range from traditional to punk classics, there are even a few originals.

The jam meets at “The Sussex Yacht Club”, 85/89 Brighton Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, BN43 6RF on the second Tuesday of each month 7.30pm till 9.30pm.

There is a mini jam on the fourth Tuesday of each month at the same time and venue.

Occasional away fixtures are played in local venues and the jam organises its own festival in September of each year at The Ropetackle Arts Centre. Many groups have formed out of the jam.

All abilities are welcome. Just come along, or if you want more information email ukeattheduke@outlook.com

Follow us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/groups/102910793112269/

Jams are led by many players and are an independent non-profit collective. There is no charge for attending our jams and no formalities, just turn up and play with us.

Christmas Jam 8th December at 7.30pm

This is our last meeting of the year so the Christmas book must come out. Take a look at the songbook links and you will see we have a new 2015 version which will be the one we will use. It is only two songs different from the 2014 version, so if you use a paper copy you can simply print off Twelve days of Christmas on page 12 and Jingle Bell Rock on page 10 and tuck them in your old copy.

We will also continue the new songs in book 12 and revisit book 10.

So to sum up you need books 10, 12 and Christmas 2015.

If you're not coming to the Christmas meeting may we wish you a splendid festive season and good strumming in 2016.

Finally Meriel's Secret and Blackcap are playing at the Three Graces in Portland Road, Hove on the 12th of December at 8.00pm. There will be a communal jam at the end so bring your uke. Hope to see you there.

Hope And Social – A Band Anyone Can Join

Coronation Green, Shoreham on Saturday 17th October, 1.00pm

Following on from the very successful Ukulele Festival Sussex, for October we have another huge event planned with a band called Hope And Social from Leeds and their show A Band Anyone Can Join. First, to get a flavour of what this is all about, have a read of three accounts of one of their previous shows: here, and here, and from the band members themselves here.

If you want to have a listen to the band, you can view the culmination of their big Yorkshire Festival project where they opened the Tour de France: Grand Depart – Opening Ceremony at Leeds Arena (and supposedly to 300,000,000 people on TV) last year on YouTube

Hope And Social will be presenting a free, family-friendly A Band Anyone Can Join show on Saturday 17th October in the afternoon in a marquee on Coronation Green, Shoreham.

Want to join in with this? Of course you do!! There are four songs (all originals) you will need to know. Here they are, click on each one below to go to the web page to download an audio file:
There's also an "instructional" video on YouTube for Rolling Sideways.

Go to this folder to download all the uke chords.

Use this link to download a whole bunch of bangin' Hope And Social mp3 files, including the four songs above and all the other potential tunes they'll be doing across all the groups at the Shoreham A Band Anyone Can Join show. NB this is a big (about 160MB) zip file.

To join in you'll need to be on Coronation Green, Shoreham on Saturday 17th October by 1.00pm at the latest, as we are on at 1.15pm. We will also get a chance to play some of our own stuff, for which we will use the Wukulele & Uke at the Duke Paddle Songbook 2015.

In the week before this show there will be the usual Uke at the Duke jam on Tue 13th October when we'll be using books 1, 5 and 11, then on Wed 14th October we can meet up with Hope and Social at the Duke of Wellington to run through the songs that they will teach us, to be ready to join in their show on Saturday 17th October.

Everyone is welcome, so come and join us!

8th September Jam at 7.30pm

Here's the latest update from Lawrie:

Lots of interesting news this month.

For our meeting on Tuesday 8th we will be using books 3, 4 and 5.

This will be our last meeting before the Festival which is just around the corner. The line up can be found at ukulelefestivalsussex.co.uk

Bookings for our workshops are coming in, but because we have the use of the mezzanine floor upstairs we can still fit more of you in. If you would like to attend please send me an email or see me on Tuesday.

I know the people performing have been practising hard so please come along to support.

Wukulele, Sundowners, Ukeladies, LUSH,and Bad Ukes are all bringing music to give out so you can join in with them so it is going to be a very hands on festival.

Finally I have received a great deal of information about the project "A band anyone can join" which I will send out after next week, however the dates for your diary are:

  • Tue 13th October  Uke at the Duke meeting with launch of book 12.
  • Wed 14th October  Meet up with the group Hope and Social at the Duke of Wellington to run through the songs that they will teach us. By that time I will have sent out music and in some cases videos for you to look at. The songs are originals not covers.
  • Sat 17th October  Perform the songs with Hope and Social in a Marquee on Coronation Green Shoreham, as well as play a few songs on our own.

It's going to be great fun. Tell your friends and bring them along.

Think that's enough for now.

Lawrie and Sally

Here's another video from Martin of one of our previous jams. If you would like to see more videos like this, take a look on YouTube here.

11th August Jam at 7.30pm

We will be using books 6, 7 and 8. Songs which we have played before so it should be fun.

A few other things to mention. In October we will have our usual jam on Tuesday 13th and then an extra one the next day Wednesday 14th where we will team up with "Hope and Social", a band anyone can join. Here is a clip so you get the idea.

More info nearer the time but it should be fun.

The ukulele festival raffle will start at the August jam and continue up to and across the festival events. It's a fantastic concert size Noah uke which can be seen at our jams, so come and take a peek.

Finally please keep an eye on our ukulele festival website at www.ukulelefestivalsussex.co.uk for further information and updates concerning the festival events.

9th June Jam at 7.30pm

Tonight we'll be practising for "Paddle Round The Pier", so please bring along the "Wukulele & Uke at the Duke Paddle Songbook 2015" book as well as book 11. Here's a message from Lawrie:

For those of you who have not been before, "Paddle Round The Pier" run a ukulele stage as part of a festival on Hove Lawns, you can find out more at www.paddleroundthepier.com.

We team up with our sister jam Wukulele and play a few songs from the stage, the format is exactly the same as our monthly meetings so please don't be intimidated by the rather grand festival title. All are welcome. We are playing at 11.00 on Saturday 4th July so please try and get there by 10.45. I thought we all might like to wear a hat of some description. If you have any questions please see Lawrie or Pete at the meeting.

Plans for our festival are moving along well and I hope to have more information soon.

See you on the 9th.

Lawrie and Sally

Here's a video from our last jam, thanks to Martin for providing this.

14th April Jam at 7.30pm

Our next meeting is on 14th April where we will be using books 7, 8, and 9.

Arrangements for the festival are taking place and we hope to have some firm news soon on who is playing and how you can join in. The date is set for 20th September though so please keep it free.

Monday, 2 March 2015

10th March Jam at 7.30pm

This month's books will be 4, 5 and 6 as we continue to visit old hits and songs we haven't played recently.

Last month there was concern raised about the inability to hear at the far end of the pub near the Bar Billiard table where a growing band of ukers are seated. In order to address this we are going to try setting up the P.A. and mike by the fireplace. This will involve putting the speakers up on stands which although better for the sound may have consequences for movement along the bar. Anyway let's try it and see how we go. This will mean there will be extra seating by the piano and to the front of the stage.

There's a new updated index to all our songs available to download using this link.

Look forward to seeing you on the 10th

10th February Jam at 7.30pm

We're going back to basics this month and using books 1, 2 and 3.

You can read a review of last year's festival which should bring back memories of a great day.

We are starting to think about the next festival already, which the pub would like to hold on a Saturday this year. Do you have any thoughts on this, or anyone you would like to see? Please tell our jam leaders as we rely on your feedback.

See you on the 10th.

13th January Jam at 7.30pm

This month you will need to bring books 6, 9, and 10. Everybody welcome!
